BOYD COFFEE COMPANY INTRODUCES LIMITED-EDITION
‘PORTLAND PUBLIC MARKET’ BLEND

Portland based Roaster to Honor the Culinary Artistry
of James Beard and Celebrate Taste America Food Festival

September 17, 2007

This month, Boyd Coffee Company, a Portland-based specialty coffee roaster with more than 100 years in the industry, is introducing the limited edition ‘Portland Public Market Blend To Honor James Beard,’ a new coffee in tribute to the great American chef and food writer, James Beard. A unique blend of Specialty Arabica beans from Ethiopia and Sumatra, the Public Market Blend is a medium-body coffee with a floral bouquet and bright acidity, which makes it lively, balanced and pleasantly sweet. Twelve-ounce bags will debut at the Taste America benefit event at Union Station on Sept. 28.

All coffee sales from the local Taste America events will benefit the James Beard Foundation and the effort to establish a permanent public market in Beard’s honor. Post-event, the Public Market Blend will be available for a limited time in select food markets in the Northwest, on the Boyd Coffee Company web site, and at Boyd’s three Portland coffee cafés, including:

  • Pearl District Café, 404 NW 11th Ave. Portland 97210
  • Cultural District, Eliot Tower Café, 1229 SW 10th Ave. Portland 97205
  • Boyd Roastery Café, 19730 NE Sandy Blvd. Portland 97230

“We are very excited to unveil our new Portland Public Market blend to honor James Beard,” says David Boyd, Co CEO & President. “Like James Beard, Boyd Coffee Company is part of the fabric of Portland, so it seemed only natural to create this blend for this celebration.”.

About the James Beard Foundation

Commemorating its 20th anniversary, the James Beard Foundation is dedicated to celebrating, preserving and nurturing America’s culinary heritage and diversity in order to elevate the appreciation of culinary excellence. A cookbook author and teacher with an encyclopedic knowledge of food, Oregon-native James Beard, who died in 1985, was a champion of American cuisine. He helped educate and mentor generations of professional chefs and food enthusiasts. Today, the Beard Foundation continues in the same spirit by administering a number of diverse programs that include educational initiatives, food industry awards, scholarships to culinary schools, and publications, in addition to maintaining the historic James Beard House in New York City’s Greenwich Village as a “performance space” for visiting chefs.
